LakeHouse Paint Color Schedule

I cant even begin with counting the number of hours I have spent researching the right paint colors for the right home. Clients have come to me fairly overwhelmed after visiting the paint store and looking through literally THOUSANDS of color options! Often times they quickly want to give in to what is most popular, disregarding what color is BEST for their space. It is truly something to be refined!

Below I have listed some things to always consider!

  • Paint LRV value and how it will react in dark spaces compared to well lit spaces.

  • Colors and finishes surrounding the space your planning to paint.

  • Naturally lit spaces VS Interior Lighting. If your space is mostly lit with an Interior Light Fixture then you will also want to consider what light bulbs your using and what color temperature they give off.

  • Wall texture.

  • Colors you see within your line of sight through your windows

K! So that’s my list! But what does all of that mean, right? Allow me to show you!

Have you ever seen a paint color you loved at your mother in laws house but when you tried it in your bathroom, it was as though they mixed the color wrong and now your shower curtain looks more blue than grey? Thats because all of the colors within the space (including your towel and toothbrush holder) react to one another and influence each other’s undertones. It is also because lighting always plays along with the colors and ejoys throwing in a wrench, testing your true design skills.

I created this color pallet above for a client living on the lake (hence the title, Lake home Paint Pallet). Because it is a Lake Home, they have a lot of windows to display the great outdoors, its green, natural tones and, of course, maximize the view of the lush, blue lake. The windows are providing not only a great view but also, a lot of natural light and influencing all of the colors in the home and how they display themselves.

For example, looking at the Office paint color you may be thinking, “OUI! That is a dark color for an office”… It certainly is not that dark when your office is in the corner of the home with windows larger than your front door allowing the natural daylight to flood in!

Look at the picture below… This is how it is ACTUALLY reacting to the space with having a lot of natural light… It is moody, sophisticated and energetic all at the same time!

Or how about Sherwin Williams- Oylmpus White… In the paint swatch shown at the top, it looks almost hospital white… right? Maybe even washed out compared to the rest of the color selections? Olympus White has an LRV Value of 68 which means the color is light and will reflect away most of the light falling on it. Used best for small spaces and leaving enough character to the color thats its not, in fact, a boring hospital white. When it is paired with trim painted Sherwin Williams- Extra White, it is actually a very quaint and soft contrast making the room feel relaxed.

Your guests want nothing else but a relaxed environment, especially when visiting your Lake Home! Shown Below is in fact, Olympus White. Doesn't the color combination make the space feel refreshing and ready for peaceful enjoyment?!

Another paint color that gets misleading reactions is Sherwin Williams-Silver Strand. This is one of my favorite colors of all time! It is probably one of the best colors to use in a space with little to no light. It has such an aquatic reflection because of the balance of the green and blue color with an undertone of grey. This color works well in well lit spaces but its true beauty comes out with artificial lighting.

Below is an example of the beauty of Silver Strand by Sherwin Williams in natural light. Doesn’t this color just scream “LAKE LIFE!”

LOVVEEEE!

Moral of this lesson…?

Never trust a paint swatch in the paint store! Always do your research and be sure you are keeping all of the elements in the design before making a final call! Doing the research and studying your space will have you so much heart ache, money, sweat and tears in the long run!
