Top 3 Ways To Quickly Update Your 2022 Space.

What a crazy busy Holiday season it has been! Being busy with work and family is such a great thing but can also have you eager to ring in the New Year and start some fresh decor and design trends!

Here are my top 3 things you can do to quickly update and influence your space when preparing for your fresh New Year!

Update #1 : Bring in some plants!

Bring in some green plants!

... Actually bring in ALOT of plants! Though some of us did not inherit our Grandmothers green-thumb, (I know I didnt, shhhh…) we have many other options than the real deal! Faux plants have come a long way and work out great! Another way to bring in the plant life is through artwork! Keep it simple and make sure however you add the plant-fluence, it compliments your space!

Not only are plants a great way to freshen up a tired space, they are also a great way to create Fung Shui throughout your home. Plants are a symbol of life and bring positive energy to everything around them.

Do you ever wonder why your Grandmothers plants are so green and healthy or maybe your quiet friends plants who stays home and reads books on the weekends instead of heading out for dinner everynight? Its because they are nurturing and watering and talking (yes, some people enjoy talking) to their plants. It really is a thing! I personally bought a dying plant from Walmart and thought maybe I would try to not kill this one… I definitley put in the effort! I watered it, I watched it, I enjoyed it and guess what?! It is the only non-dying plant I have!

Update #2 : Minimalize the Clutter!

Minimalize the clutter!

Look around and be honest with yourself when you consider if that piece of decor or that basket is serving purpose in your life anymore... or even the last 5 years?

What's collecting dust?

The best way to go about this is to completely clear off your console table and only put back the things your truly LOVE! As for the rest of the stuff, give it away or sell it.

Clearing the clutter clears the mind! Once again, another Fung Shui move to make to help you reside in peace and harmony.

Often times clients will ask for help with their existing peices and where to put them and how to put them. Its hard, but I always say…’Get rid of that molding flower pot with nothing in it’ Or ‘What purpose does that collection of rocks serve? Do you like to collect rocks? Yes? We need to find a way to display them so that they aren’t laying around.’ Or ‘How long have you had those fake flowers on the bottom of your TV console? Lets replace them with something more exciting for 2022 and stop working around our 2000 decor to make things work.’

Its not that we always need to have NEW things but maybe simplifying and getting rid of some of the things that we have collected for 10 years could create the WOW! factor your longing for. Try it for yourselves! Let me know how things go!

Update #3 : Bring Back the WOW! factor!

Bring back the WOW! factor!

Update your light fixtures! I would like to say 'Update all light fixture' but I know that can get costly. For starters, update your Foyer light fixture, the one you and guests see every day, multiple times a day! Maybe your design style has changed since you bought your last fixture. Maybe the fixture isn't bringing you joy anymore or providing the "WOW" factor it once was.

If you think bringing home a new bouquet of flowers from the grocery store makes your home feel refreshed and updated, imagine what a new light fixture can do! There are so many shapes, finishes and sizes to choose from. The amount of light fixtures to choose from is practically infinite! Go to your Home Depot or Y-Lighting store and shop around! A light fixture doesn’t need to be made of a million dollars to make this WOW! factor that your after. It does, however, need to coinsider with the rest of your home design and finishes. This can be a bit tricky for my clients that have difficulty with design so here are some of my best designer tips to choosing new light fixtures:

  • Always consider the head height & door swing height! If your ceiling height is at 8’-0”, you want to avoid any fixture that hangs 12” or more from the ceiling.

  • Look around and see what finishes you find for your cabinetry hardware, plumbing, door handles & other light fixtures. What do you see? Maybe Oil rubbed bronze hardware? Brushed nickle faucet? Whatever it is, try to keep the same finishes throughout. You will find yourself in a huge design dilemma (if not nightmare) if you buy a Polished Nickle light fixture with dangling crystals and try to install it in your Northwoods Rustic home next to the hanging dear heads. Look at your space and pull design evidence from what exists currently and buy based on your findings.

  • Light bulbs. Ugh, those pesky things. I know. I know. There is so much to learn and understand with lighting and how it works. Let me put it simply…. If the box on the light bulbs says 2700K then that means your going to get a very warm light and moody! If the box on the light bulbs says 6500K then that means its going to get a very cool and bright light! Warm light is for friendly and inviting spaces where bright white lights are more for hospitals and jewelry stores.

Which ever light fixture you decide to change out (if you dont change them all out) make sure its one that your going to see everyday and not downstairs in the Guest Bedroom. Make sure that the light fixture inspires you and makes you feel enthusiastic to go to and come home from another day of work!
